dots vs Meta Muse: how they actually differ

dots from OpenAI against Muse from Meta: what each company announced, where they genuinely differ, and which details remain unpublished.

Redacción dots.ar 4 min read

dots and Muse are not two names for the same product: they are two always-on agents from competing companies. Muse is Meta’s, introduced in early September 2026. dots is OpenAI’s, launched on 29 September at DevDay, and the international press framed it without hedging as OpenAI’s answer to Muse.

What the press confirms

The framing at launch was not ambiguous:

When four outlets of that size converge on the framing, it is not interpretation: it is the reading the launch itself invited.

The slip that explains everything

During launch coverage, an OpenAI executive referred to the product as “Muse” in a live interview. At the time it read as an anecdotal error.

With the full context, it reads differently: the name that surfaced by mistake was the main competitor’s. It was not a random word. It was the product dots is positioned against, said out loud at the worst possible moment.

The underlying difference

This is where precision is worth the space, because a lot of shallow comparison is circulating.

What is documented:

  • OpenAI is folding dots into a wider model-and-agent framework, alongside Codex and ChatGPT Work. dots is not a standalone product: it is the agency layer of an ecosystem.
  • Meta built Muse around its own ecosystem and its own user base.
  • Both aim at continuous background work rather than one-off conversation.

What we will not assert: we publish no detailed comparison of Muse’s capability, latency, integration count or security, because we do not have Meta’s primary documentation in hand. Inventing a table of specifications for a product we have not verified would be the exact opposite of what this site is for.

The honesty of that table is the point: where we lack the Muse figure, we say so instead of filling it in.

The incident record: what stopped being unverified

When we first published this page, we marked Muse’s incident record as unverified. That changed. Between 28 and 29 September 2026, three independent reports about permission failures in Muse appeared:

  • The Guardian: Muse shared a user’s home address with a buyer without his consent, and the buyer turned up at his home. After the user told it to stop sharing the address, Muse gave it to five more people in tests.
  • Inc., covered by AppleInsider: Muse synced 187,000 lines from the author’s Messages database with full disk access disabled and without permission to access Messages.
  • Hunterbrook Media: over two days of testing, Muse could be prompted to compile lists of real Facebook and Instagram accounts of vulnerable groups, cross-checking social data with web searches to obtain full names.

Meta responded publicly to the first case, maintaining that in similar investigations Muse followed direct instructions and asked for permission correctly, and did not respond to comment requests about the third.

We cover it with full attribution and Meta’s responses in our report on the Muse incidents.

Why this is an axis of comparison and not an anecdote: all three cases are permission failures, not capability ones. In dots, access is granted per plugin and proactive research is read-only by construction. That design is what should be compared, and there is now a documented case on the other side.

How to choose in practice

Instead of a falsely neutral recommendation, three concrete questions:

  1. Where do you live? If you are in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, dots is not available on Pro. That alone may settle it.
  2. Which ecosystem do you already use? dots leans on ChatGPT, Codex and ChatGPT Work; Muse on Meta’s turf. The cost of switching ecosystems usually outweighs the difference between agents.
  3. What do you need it to do on its own? If the work is scoped and checkable, either will do. If you need it to operate a computer and run code, look at the detail for each — and for Muse, get Meta’s documentation before deciding.

What is missing for a full comparison

OpenAI published detailed documentation for dots: a getting-started guide, a privacy and safety FAQ, and approval rules. Meta has no equivalent we have been able to verify at the necessary level of detail.

That asymmetry is real and worth knowing: today it is far easier to audit dots than Muse, not because one is better, but because one published more. When Meta publishes its documentation, we update this page.

Frequently asked questions about dots

Are Meta Muse and OpenAI dots the same thing?

No. They are two always-on agents from different, competing companies: Muse is Meta's and dots is OpenAI's, launched on 29 September 2026 explicitly aimed at that rival.

Which one came first?

Muse: Meta introduced it in early September 2026. dots arrived on 29 September, at OpenAI's DevDay.

Why did OpenAI's CFO say Muse on television?

It was a slip during a live interview. That the name that surfaced was the main competitor's says a lot about how the product is positioned.

What is the underlying difference between them?

Positioning. OpenAI is folding dots into a wider model-and-agent framework with Codex and ChatGPT Work; Meta built Muse as an agent around its own ecosystem.

Which one should I choose?

It depends on where you live and which ecosystem you already use. dots is gated by plan and market (Pro excludes the EEA, Switzerland and the UK); Muse competes on Meta's turf.
